Stupor Sunday
My friend Karinne’ made me 25 minutes of recordings of herself singing whatever comes to her mind, and I’m going to cut it all up and make it into music. Someday. When school is over. I’m very excited to reach that stage.

Mozart Week: The Epic Final Chapter!
For a class project, I (Mike) had to listen to three hours of a genre of music that I have never listened to by choice before, and keep a detailed log of observations from the listening experience. I chose Classical Period Classical Music, and decided to listen to nothing but Mozart for all three hours. This week, I am posting all five days of my listening log. It’s a trainwreck...

– Johnny Depp discussing the inspiration for his Mad Hatter in the new Alice in Wonderland movie. This is just another example of how Johnny Depp and I are pretty much exactly the same person. I’m always getting mistaken for that guy. It’s annoying.
I have cracked the Ke$ha code.
This guy has “figured it out”.
So Mike, does he have it right?

I think she’s popular because her lyrics reflect what sheltered 13-year-old girls think wild 21-year-old girls do. The situations depicted in her songs are either logistically implausible (grown-ups seldom hook up in backs of car-car-cars, because they tend to have home-home-homes) or deeply unpleasant...

I’ve got control, I shift my shape

I’m realizing that my reaction to this Local Natives record probably has to do with it resonating with this specific moment in my life. Whether that will lessen its impact as time goes on or cement it BECAUSE I’ll relate it to this period of my life, remains to be seen.

World Sick
My initial excitement about the new Broken Social Scene record had slowly been replaced with a vague sense of worry. After all it had been five years since their beautiful train-wreck of a record Broken Social Scene. What followed were two solo records. Each of which contained the strengths and weaknesses of Broken Social Scene’s double protagonists.

Super Sunday! The Sad Winter Mix
Super Sunday is a Big Opus semi-weekly feature. It’s a chance for Ben and/or Mike to take a break from surfing the web for other people’s music and shed some light on their own creative musical persuits. The goal is to use the dialog of the blog to become as motivated to make our own music as we have been to talk about the music we listen to as fans.
Earlier this week, a mixtape I made was...

Thoughts on Romance is Boring by Los Campesinos!
I downloaded Romance is Boring earlier this month from eMusic. I dragged the tracks directly into an iTunes playlist to burn a CD quickly — I wanted to play it for some friends who would be over shortly. I didn’t check for correctness or completeness.
I played it that night and I really liked it. It was young and angry and funny and touching and chaotic.
After a few more listens...

BEN FLASH: And Sheff’s response.
I think we are ships passing in the night here glassanimal. Couple of points:
a. I don’t think Hollywood smoke and mirrors is going to get rid of teen angst either. I do however think that they are, and are going to continue, selling teen angst to teens while at the same time selling the relief…
